1. Professional Registration

All Nurses and Midwives are required to have UK NMC Registration to be employed in Jersey in their professional capacity.

The NMC website provides clear guidance on the registration process for both European and Non European applicants to the register. It is likely that you would be required to work temporarily in the UK to access the UK NMC register in the first instance.

All professions also need to register locally to comply with Jersey Law. Registration renewal is required on an annual basis. It is free, with initial local registration being facilitated by HR during the recruitment and selection process.

2. Visa and Employment

All RNs/RMs and ODPs are required to have a full UK work visa to be employed in Jersey.

Staff are required to work full time if recruited externally from the island for the first five years of their residency. Exceptions may be made in exceptional circumstances for a maximum of three months.

Your spouse will be able to work in any private sector or public sector post on the Island.

Non-married partners of HSSD Registered Nurses are able to work under licence within the private sector on the island. If they apply for a public sector post, then they will be required to submit an application to the Population Office for consideration which will be verified by the prospective employer.

All RNs recruited externally would qualify for ‘J’ category housing status. RNs who can evidence ten consecutive years’ education in Jersey are entitled to local residency unless away from the island for five years or more.

Adult dependants would need a full UK visa if non-European and would have no entitlement to benefits or allowances or personal care support unless they have five or more years’ residency in Jersey.

3. Accommodation

HSSD has some accommodation that is provided for approximately six months to enable staff to settle in the island and decide where they would prefer to live. Our accommodation team is able to negotiate some leases on properties for staff who are relocating.

Accommodation costs vary considerably ranging from £134 per week upwards for a room in a shared house depending on individual needs and preferences.

4. Childcare and Education

Childcare ranges from £4.54 per hour upwards. There are nurseries and registered childminders on the island as well as school holiday clubs and some after-school facilities.

Everyone is entitled to 20 hours’ free childcare per week for all children aged between 4 and 5 year in the year immediately pre-school.

Both primary and secondary school education and standards are excellent with results similar to the top performing schools in the UK in relation to examination results.

5. Continuing Professional Development

We have an excellent in-house Education Centre providing a vast range of programmes for CPD for all grades of staff.

We have a limited number of newly-qualified nurse posts available each year. We offer an extended 12-month period of preceptorship to support staff with the transition from student to staff nurse and develop flexible and transferable skills across the registered workforce.

6. Terms and Conditions

Terms and Conditions The pay structure named The States of jersey Nurses and Midwives career framework. The Grades equate to the UK Agenda for Change band below i.e. Band 5 UK = Grade 4 Jersey. The structure is similar to the original UK Whitley scale. The top increment is a gateway requiring specific criteria relating to CPD to be achieved before the increment is awarded.

Annual leave entitlement for RNs is five weeks and three days plus eight or nine Bank Holidays (depending on whether Liberation day falls on a week day).

7. Travel

There is easy access to the UK and France from Jersey via ferry or air. There is a daily timetable of sailings to both in addition to a variety of air links

The main hospital site is in the centre of town and serviced by a good bus route. Staff working in Mental Health, rehabilitation, Older Peoples Services, and some specialist nursing posts may require transport as these are on different sites to the main hospital.
